The Republic of Portugal, one of Europe's fastest modernizing countries, faces the millennium from roots as a nation state that dates back to the early 1100's. The country's population of about 11 million people is largely concentrated in the capital, Lisbon, and other coastal cities on the Atlantic, particularly Oporto. As one of the most important tourist and golf destinations in Europe, the country received almost 25 million visitors last year.

As a member of the European Union (EU) and of the European Monetary System (EMS), Portugal has adopted the EURO as its currency.
